OUR HISTORY

Englishman and real estate visionary, John Bateman Harcourt, settled first in Melbourne, Australia, before making his move to New Zealand’s newly established capital, Wellington, at the tender age of 21. It was here he purchased an established soft goods company in 1879, re-naming it ‘Harcourt and Co’. By 1888 he had transformed his original venture into an exciting new business in property services, and so began the Harcourts we know and respect today. The company flourished, quickly establishing its expertise in the sale of not only city property, but also country, seaside, mining, farms and large holdings of land. Over the next 100 years, driven by several transformational changes in ownership and structure, Harcourt’s original land and estate agency went on to become New Zealand’s most trusted real estate brand.
